Week 2

Hi again!

Another week has pass. Which means another thing I learned
Do you know what CALL is? Being a former customer service worker, I never knew there is another name for CALL. CALL is the acronym for Computer Assisted Language Learning. It is basically the technology that assist users in multiple skills like reading, writing, listening and speaking. Since technology keep advancing, obtaining information can be done anywhere and whenever we desires especially in learning new language. There are a few types of CALL programmes, namely:
  • CALL specific software
  • Web based learning materials
  • Generic software
  • Computer mediated communication programme
All the programme above enable not only to learner but instructor as well to easily receive and distribute materials. For example, asynchronous and synchronous. Asynchronous can be seen in forum where it allow anyone with the same interest to get together without physically present and discuss. Whereas, synchronous can be seen in web cam online chat where people who prefer face to face conversation. Overall, CALL provide new ways of learning for learner and instructor where it might not require going to a classroom to obtain knowledge.

Other then CALL, search engines and online database was one of the topics in the syllabus this week. Search engine is a program that search and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user. There are a few parts of a search engine:

  • Database
  • Web Crawlers
  • User Interface
  • Information Retrival System
As a student who is not really good with IT, all this terms are new for me. Obtaining all this new knowledge broaden my mind not just in language learning but also in IT. Hope with all this information, I can make a good use of it in my studies and life.

Until we meet again, Bye!
